"Vegas, Baby!": Prom 2008

Yes, it's true - the students still think we are the coolest teachers at Melrose HS, so we were once again the prom advisors this year. Okay, so truthfully they don't have a decision in whether we are the advisors or not, but it makes us sound really important. This is my fifth year doing it. It's pretty fun, but it's a lot of work for one evening. This year it should have been called winter formal instead of prom as we had a blizzard going on Saturday morning and afternoon. People were calling asking if we were going to cancel prom. Ryan's response (to me - not to the callers): "...last time I checked prom was an inside, optional event. We could get 10 more inches of snow and we STILL would not call it off." The reason for the sarcasm: we seriously are given about 5 hours to set up in the elementary gym and cafeteria. If we had to go and tear down all those quality cardboard structures, we would have to re-order everything (thus costing us a ton more) and then set it all up again on a weekend that worked for everyone. Not going to happen. So luckily the snow tapered off and the roads were good enough and everyone made it! Teague stayed home on Saturday night with Nana and Papa. Many of the girls were asking if they could take Teague as their prom date, but I said he is MUCH too young to date. The only girl he cares most about right now is his mama and I am going to keep it that way for as long as I can because I know there will come a day when I just don't rate anymore. The kids picked "Las Vegas" for decorations and we needed to come up with a theme and Ryan gave them the grand idea of "Vegas, Baby!" and it stuck! Ryan was dealing blackjack, which was a hit - with no real gambling going on of course. He complained that his shoulder and "rotater cuff" hurt afterwards. At least I don't have to worry about him quitting his job to go work on the reservation as a blackjack dealer. So all in all it was a great evening and the kids really seemed to enjoy themselves. I forgot to take some pictures of the cafeteria, only the gym. Here are some pictures...

I love that even in high school Vegas is the city of choice! Start 'em young!!! :o) It would actually be kind of fun to do a prom committee now. Cute.
